Out of Work

After 10 years at Cornell I suddenly find myself 'out on the street'. Actually it is more a forced leave of absence. Since today I am no longer allowed to be employed in the US, so I am pretending not to be at the office.

This is a side-effect of the long processing times at the Citizenship and Immigration Service. After many years on H1B I filed for permanent residency in July of 2001, now almost 3 years ago. The first phase in which they determine whether you are eligible completed rather quickly, but the second phase ('adjustment of status'), which is supposed to be purely administrative, is taking forever.

I have been on temporary employment approvals for some time now, but this time around the approval has not arrived before the current one expired, and Cornell, being a law-abiding employer, had to terminate my contract. I expect this to be resolved soon, but it is annoying none the less.

I thought my permanent residency case (green-card) was straight forward, it is not like we just arrived in this country. When I check the status of my application it says 'in July of 2003 we received your fingerprints and we will contact you if more information is needed'

Don't call us, we'll call you ...
