Gates on Campus

Cornell is on of the five schools Bill gates is visiting this week. He was here yesterday afternoon and after a roundtable discussion with the faculty he gave a presentation to a larger Cornell audience. A reasonably good non-tech overview of the talk can be read at this Cornel Sun article

The talk was relatively mellow for CS insiders, but I have heard others that were quite positive about it. No earth shocking announcements, but lots of talk of exploiting 3D in interfaces, on pervasive event infrastructures, security, spam control, etc. Enough visionary stuff to impress the general audience without alienating the CS core. There were quite a bit of jokes, and also in the Q&A session Gates showed himself to be a good entertainer. In the Q&A session he managed to impress people with detailled answers on topics from AIDS research to technologies for sharing wireless bandwidth. I have seen him do a lot worse.
