Genius 2003

With all the buzz about the Nobel prizes being announced it is easy to overlook that this weekend also the MacArthur Fellows were announced. This year there were 24 awards, better know as Genius Grants, each consisting of $500,000 over 5 years, with no strings attached. There is one computer scientist in the group, Erik Demaine, a 22 year old junior professor at MIT, who works on computational geometry. Which means there were less CS geniusses compared to last year when there were two computer scientists, Daniela Rus (Dartmouth/MIT, Robotics) and Daniel Jurafsky (Collorado, Comp. Linguistics) and one Physicist who works in Information Science, Paul Ginsparg (Cornell).
