Scraping Downloads

Sometimes small favors can have big (timesaving) impact, I am grateful for John & Richard for providing a feed for MS downloads.

Microsoft Downloads Center I'm always on the look out for new stuff from Microsoft (i.e. documentation, service packs, etc.). As such, I visit the Microsoft Downloads Center more often than I'd like. Being a Radio user, I wanted a RSS feed that aggregated the latest downloads available, but sadly, I couldn't find one. So, Richard Birkby and I banged one out: The feed is updated every four hours. By the way, Chris Lovett's SgmlReader rocks[via John Bristowe's Radio Weblog]

The Herald project at Microsoft Research always had as one of the main goals to be a global event delivery service that could delivery notifications such as new downloads based on a user's subscription. In that sense they have similar goals to Newswire. But until MS starts this sort of push service I am happy with this particular feed, and we'll read it into newswire and provide real-time delivery with a 4 hour delay :-).
